No matter where you are or what you are doing, if you come across a big Bull Dozer digging holes, I bet you will stop and watch it for a while. It has been our guilty pleasure to watch these gigantic heavy equipment do their work. However, no matter how different heavy equipment are from each other or how different their work is, we often call them all by one name-‘dozer’. Even if you know the difference, you might still not know their names. Don’t worry, this article is here to help you remember not only their names but their purpose as well. A list of various types of heavy equipment for construction are as follows:

Backhoe Loader

A backhoe loader is one of the most common types of heavy construction equipment.  It usually consists of a tractor, a loader, and a backhoe. It’s a piece of heavy construction machinery that has a variety of applications. The purpose of this heavy machine is for loading, unloading, and excavating. Furthermore, it can also lift heavyweight construction material to a different level of heights.

Loaders

This large construction machines assist loading heavy materials onto dumper trucks among other vehicles. It contains a large bucket at its front with a shorter moving arm. The bucket can carry tones of different types of heavy materials including soil, rocks, raw materials as well as debris from a demolished building. Tracks or wheels are one of the special features of loaders. The tracked loaders are generally used in the sites where the wheeled cannot reach.

Compactors

One of the commonly seen heavy construction machine is compactors. They can create smooth surfaces on highways and other types of roads. There are different types of compactors with various purposes. For example, smooth wheel rollers can compact shallow layers of soil or asphalt. Whereas, sheep-foot rollers can be used for deep compaction purposes.

Bulldozers

Bulldozers are another common type of soil excavating equipment that are common to see on construction sites. They are used in removing or pushing massive amounts of construction materials such as soil or sand. They remove the soil with the help of a sharp edged wide metal plate provided at its front. The plate can also go lower and elevate using hydraulic pistons.

Dumb Truck

The purpose of a dumb truck is to carry various materials in large quantities from one place to another. They are also known by various names such as ‘dumper trucks’, ‘tipper trucks’ and ‘dumpers’. In a dumper truck, the chassis of a truck connects with a dump body that mounts on its frame. The bed in this heavy construction machinery raises with the help of a vertical hydraulic ram.

Excavators

Excavators are popular equipment in the construction industry. They not only can be use for excavation but also for heavy lifting, demolition, river dredging and cutting of trees. They contain four pieces, including a boom, a dipper or stick, a bucket, and a cab. A rotating platform like houses uses excavators mostly. These pieces of equipment have many purposes. They are also available in both wheel and track forms.

Tower Cranes

The construction sites of high-rises and skyscrapers mostly uses tower cranes. They can easily carry different types of construction materials such as frames, concrete blocks, bricks, steel pipes, wooden frames, and even laborers to different levels of height. These cranes are fixed and are installed to facilitate a construction project of a high-rise tower in terms of hoisting different building materials as well as construction tools.
